What is Strategy?
Strategy is "the big how"
He may be a controversial figure and he may not immediately spring to mind when one thinks about the word "strategy" (I'm sure a lot of people think of other words to describe him) but Alasdair Campbell's understanding of what strategy is and its importance, in my mind, is genius.
Winston Churchill once said that "True genius resides in the capacity for evaluation of uncertain, hazardous and conflicting information." Alasdair Campbell, in my opinion has the ability to do this in order to create a simple and clear strategy from the "noise" which is often going on and trying to distract the decision maker.
His book "Winners" is not only a fantastic read but offers a clear view and frame work on the importance of strategy and how to create one. Drawing on examples in business, politics and sport, Campbell argues the importance of SIG: Strategy is God, using what he calls the Holy Trinity of OST; Objective, Strategy and Tactics measured with SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Specific.
Below is a video of Campbell describing his understanding on strategy.
